I am one of those who have a profile on MySpace. Many does. It is in fact one of the most popular sites on the internet. There are many different communities on the internet and this is one of them.
So why do I have a profile on MySpace? I don't use it to communicate with friends or anything like that. For that purpose I have a profile on Facebook. For me, MySpace is all about the music. It is the perfect tool for me when it comes to keeping myself up to date on the bands I love. They post everything from news about what's happening with the band to pictures and music. It is also a great place to check out new bands. Maybe bands that my bands are fans of. That is always a good start. And if I've seen a great concert with a band, this is a nice place to give them some feedback.
Now, the key to all of this, is that the bands must have a profile. If they don't, I can't be "friends" with them, and they won't turn up on my updates. So if there's going to be any point in using MySpace on my behalf, it needs to contain as many profiles as possible.
As so many other sites on the internet, the rumour now says that you will have to pay in order to use MySpace. In this case, there might actually be some truth to it. However, I believe that charging people to use MySpace will ruin one of the site's biggest strengths. I have already explained what that is, and I honestly don't believe that musicians, broke as fuck, in small bands, are willing to pay to have a profile. They'd rather use one of the other internet communities designed to promote bands, free of charge.
So as to the question of whether or not I would pay to have my profile on MySpace, I think the answer is yes. If things would continue to be the same. However, since I don't think they would, and a lot of bands would disappear from the site, I won't. Would you?
